“Morning,” I grumble as I drag my aching body into the kitchen.

“Oh my God, Sadie, what happened to you?” River’s brows hit her hairline as she gawks at me.

“What?”

“You have a bruise on your—”

“Shit.” I leap out of the chair and hurry into the hall to the mirror above the sideboard. Sure enough, I have a wicked looking bruise along my throat. Grabbing a hoodie off the coat rack, I pull it over my head and fluff the hood around my neck.

“It’s nothing,” I lie.

“But…”

“I must have hurt myself last night.”

“You were pretty drunk.” River sips her coffee. “I—”

“Mornin’.” Jax strolls into the kitchen. “Is there coffee?”

“I just made a fresh pot.” River beams. Too eager and too bright for nine on a Saturday morning.

I barely slept after Rhett left, his parting words playing over and over in my head. He acted so cold and aloof after we had some of the hottest sex of my life, but there was something in his words.

I don’t share what’s mine.

Surely he doesn’t actually think I belong to him when he treated me like all the other girls he fucks at the clubhouse?

“You okay, Sadie Ray?” The slight humor in Jax’s voice has me glowering at him.

“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”

“Oh, no reason.” He smothers a chuckle, and I shoot him a death stare.

He mimics zipping his lips while River scrolls through her phone, paying us no attention.

So, he saw Rhett last night. At least he was doing his job looking out for us, I guess. Although if he’s going to let Rhett sneak into my room whenever he likes, we’re going to have a problem.

“So Riv,” he says, “what did you think of the party?”

“I liked it.” She blushes. “I liked it a lot.”

“Good, that’s… real good.”

Ugh. It’s definitely too early to sit and watch them make moon eyes at each other. I doubt for a second Rhett or Dad will want the likes of Jax anywhere near River. They probably think he’s too chickenshit to make a move, which is why they trust him with her, but I know that look on his face. I’ve seen it one too many times on guys who want something they can’t have.

“I’m going back to bed,” I announce. “Wake me later, when Quinn gets here.”

“Are you sure?” River asks. “I was just going to make pancakes.”

“I’m sure Jax will enjoy your… pancakes.” I shoot him a knowing look, and he practically chokes on his coffee. Serves him right.

Grabbing a bottle of water from the refrigerator, I turn my attention to River. “You’ll be okay if I sleep for a little while longer?”

“Yeah. Besides, Jax will keep me company, right?” She smiles coyly at him, and he nods.

“Okay then kids, behave, and I’ll see you later.”

With a smirk, I leave the lovebirds to it and go back to my room to sleep…

And forget all about the bad decisions I made last night.
